As for what follows: I advise you and myself to have Taqwa of Allah; it is the sustenance for the journey and the escape during times of hardship, as Allah says: "And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa of Allah."

O servants of Allah: The greatest honor is steadfastness on the path of righteousness, and being safe from deviation and misguidance! Allah Almighty says: "And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little." The commentators have said: "This verse is evidence of the servant's dire need for Allah's support; because even the Prophetﷺ - the most perfect of creation - was told by Allah: 'And if We had not strengthened you.' How much more so for others?"

Steadfastness and determination are the essence of success! Shaddad ibn Aws reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught us to say: "O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in matters and determination on the path of guidance."

The root of steadfastness is the heart's steadfastness in religion; Allah says: "Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?" Al-Sa'di said: "The tree of faith [whose root is firmly fixed] in the heart of the believer: in knowledge and belief, [and its branches]: good deeds [high] in the sky."

The word of monotheism (Tawheed) is the greatest thing by which Allah strengthens the believers! Allah says: "Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter." Al-Baghawi said: "It is the saying, 'There is no god but Allah.' 'In worldly life' means before death. 'And in the Hereafter' means in the grave."

The tree of steadfastness can only stand on the trunk of patience and certainty! Patience repels desires, and certainty repels doubts; Allah says: "And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs."

Adherence to the Quran and Sunnah is the source of steadfastness and protection; the Prophet ﷺ said: "I have left among you two things, you will not go astray after them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah."

The degree of faith is proportionate to steadfastness; Allah says: "When your Lord inspired to the angels, 'I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed.'" And the people of faith have the most guided hearts and are the most steadfast in calamities! Allah says: "No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart." Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Whoever is pleased with his Lord in all states, his stance will be firm in servitude. And dissatisfaction causes the servant to waver, and he will not stand firm with Allah."

As the strangeness of religion increases, the reward for those who remain steadfast and patient doubles! The Prophet ﷺ said: "Ahead of you are days of patience, during which being patient will be like grasping a hot coal. The one who does good in those days will have the reward of fifty men who do the same." It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty of them?" He said: "The reward of fifty of you."

Those who are firmly grounded in steadfastness are not deceived by the allurements of doubts, nor do they doubt the fundamentals! Allah says: "So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And let not those who are not certain make you impatient." Ibn Taymiyyahsaid: "The light-hearted cannot stay firm but are erratic, whereas those who have certainty are stable."

Asking for steadfastness in religion is a trait of the knowledgeable exemplars; Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ frequently used to say: "O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm on Your religion."

The prayer for steadfastness is required even after death, for people are tested in their graves; the Prophet ﷺ, after burying the deceased, would stand over him and say: "Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask for him to be made steadfast, for now he is being questioned."

The Quran was revealed to strengthen faith; Allah says: "Say, 'The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make those who believe more firmand as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims.'"Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Reading the Quran contemplatively stabilizes the foundations of faith in the heart."

Among the things that strengthen the heart are listening to reminders and performing the commands! Allah says: "And if they had done what they were advised, it would have been better for them and a firmer position [for them in faith]."

Seeking help through prayers is one of the greatest stabilizers, for they prevent indecencies! Allah says: "And establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing."

Increased worship stabilizes a person during tribulations; the Prophet ﷺ said: "Worship during turmoil is like emigrating to me."

Frequent remembrance with the heart and tongue bringstability and security; Allah says: "O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much."

Among the reasons for steadfastness are moderation and patience, not being hasty; Allah says about those who disbelieve: "Why is not the Qur'an revealed to him all at once? Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly." And in the Hadith: "The most beloved deed to Allah is the one that is the most consistent, even if it is small."

The stories of the righteous stabilize the heart and strengthen determination! Allah says: "And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart." Some of the predecessors said: "Stories are among the troops of Allah, with which He stabilizes the hearts of the knowing among His servants."

As for what follows: How much we need steadfastness, especially during distressing times and dark tribulations! (O servants of Allah, be steadfast).

Whoever remains steadfast on the straight path, Allah will stabilize his step on the bridge over Hell, and whoever does not remain steadfast in the truth here will slip there! Allah says: "And there is none of you but will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed. * Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees."

Therefore, adhere to the path of truth, and do not feel alienated by the few who walk it. 'And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.' And beware of the path of falsehood, and do not be deceived by the multitude of those who perish. 'So hold firmly to that which has been revealed to you; you are indeed on a straight path.'
