First Khutbah
Our Muslim nation is currently going through terrible times, great adversities and tough continual hardships. The situation of our nation has changed; it's current state is that of bitter defeat and chronic weakness, which has become embedded in the thoughts of the Muslims. This means that our nation has declined from a nation of power and might to one of deep slumber. Moreover, it has become scattered into disputing groups; it seems that whenever our nation emerges from a hardship, it falls into another, and the greatest hardship of all for our nation is the illegal occupation of Al-Aqsaa, the deprivation of the basic human rights of the Palestinians and the killing of innocent civilians in that land.
Such hardships only come at times of spiritual and physical weakness and when nations stray away from the truth. Many nations have undergone such periods and have taken the same destructive path. Allaah says that which translates as: “And as for Thamood, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn" (Fussilat: 17) and also “Then is one to whom the evil of his deed has been made attractive so he considers it good [like one rightly guided]? …" (Faatir: 8) and also “Say [O Muhammad], 'Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds? [They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.'" (Al-Kahf: 103-104).
These are nations which forgot their creator, so He made them forget themselves, as Allaah says that which translates as: “And be not like those who forgot Allaah, so He made them forget themselves …" (Al-Hashr: 19).
The worst thing which can happen to a nation is when it takes its religion as entertainment, and entertainment becomes its religion. Sins and disobedience have evil consequences and many are the nations in the past who were destroyed as a result of them, moreover, sins are continuing to destroy the present nations as Allaah says that which translates as: “And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord concerning the sins of His servants as Acquainted and Seeing" (Al-Israa’: 17).
Despite all this, we must be an optimistic nation, because faith and pessimism cannot co-exist, for being pessimistic is to give up on the mercy of Allaah, as Allaah says that which translates as: “… Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allaah except the disbelieving people." (Yoosuf: 87).
The current hardship in Palestine is not the first and nor will it be the last; our nation has been afflicted by many adversities, some far harsher than that of Palestine, yet our nation never gave in and continued to struggle and fight until Allaah granted it victory.
If one studies the history of nations, he will see that they all suffered from hardships, but the Muslim nation emerges from these hardships and overcomes its pain, indeed this pain acts as an energizer for it to continue its work and struggle until victory. This nation went through ups and downs; its men became weak and were succeeded by a new generation of young men went on to make history. If our nation, which Allaah has honoured over all others, has been weak in the past, then history testifies that those who were born during such eras of weakness went on to carry the banner of Islaam and change history, and this is a great indication for the present time in which we are living.
The monumental events which our nation is currently living through will only inflame our determination and ambition, as proved by the great history of our nation, where Muslims have time and time again struggled through difficult situations, reflected and developed the correct mode of thought, and subsequently strove to regain their might and pride.
It is during such difficult periods that our nation produces great heroes such as brave Mujaahideen and renowned scholars. Anas bin Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “The example of my nation is like that of the rain, no one knows whether its beginning is better or its end." (Ahmad, Tirmidhi & Ibn Hibbaan). He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, also said: “Allaah continues to bring from this nation devoted people whom He uses in His obedience." (Ahmad, Ibn Maajah & Ibn Hibbaan). Also, he sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Allaah narrowed the earth for me and gave me the ability to see the east and the west (i.e., of the globe). The dominion of my nation will reach all that which Allaah made me see." (Muslim).
These events are predestined and decreed upon our nation so that it may wake up, realise the message that should be carrying, and unite it’s ranks all under one banner, the banner of laa ilaaha illallah Muhammadun rasoolullaah. It must do this sincerity and shun the pleasures of this vanishing life, and do so without depending on the enemies of Allaah for support. Allaah says that which translates as, “O you who have believed, if you support [the religion of] Allaah, He will support you and plant firmly your feet." (Muhammad: 7).
Also, it is a must that we stay in touch and be informed about the calamities that our Muslim nation is currently facing, so that we can cooperate in shouldering these grave hardships and face these painful hardships, which are temporary, all together.
The news media brings to every concerned Muslim, day and night, information about our brothers and sisters in Palestine which shake our hearts and immerse us in grief and sorrow. This Muslim nation of Palestine has not felt secure ever since the Jews occupied it's land, expelled its people from their homes, and tortured them. Yet it withstands this by defending itself, even with its women and children; indeed there is hardly a household in that land which has not lost someone in this struggle; indeed this is steadfastness which is worthy of pride.
The bloody events, tragic scenes; murder and destruction in such a barbaric manner from a people who do not have any feelings of humanity or mercy is a tragedy which makes one’s heart shiver and ones eyes flood with tears.
How can anybody in the world who claims to have a conscience remain silent while they are seeing peoples land occupied, and the dispossessed people having no means of resisting this occupation except by throwing rocks and stones, yet these people still challenge their occupiers with these rocks and stones. These are deeply moving scenes, such as when one sees a Muslim fighting with only rocks and stones, while his enemy fights him with high-tech aircraft and tanks. Indeed Allaah says that which translates as: “They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls…" (Al-Hashr: 14).
Moreover, the victims of this aggression are even deprived from their legitimate right of express and informing others of the oppression they are suffering from; the blood of their children is looked upon as hastiness and foolishness, due to the fact that they are confronting their occupying enemy with rocks - while their enemy retaliates with machine guns, aircraft and tanks.
What kind of peace can be expected from a people who keep no trusts or covenants? Allaah says that which translates as: “Is it not [true] that every time they [i.e. the Jews] took a covenant a party of them threw it away? But, [in fact] most of them do not believe" (Al-Baqarah: 100).
They have diversified their methods of committing crimes and massacres; and by doing so they are continuing their disgraceful history which is full of outrageous acts, betrayal, treachery, evil and lies, Allaah says that which translates as: “And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful" (Al-A’raaf: 167).
Every evil and hardship that exists and has existed on the land of Palestine was caused by the Jews, they initiate evil because they have sick-hearts and evil intentions and souls, Allaah says that which translates as: “…Every time they [i.e., the Jews] kindled the fire of war, Allaah extinguished it. And they strive throughout the land [causing] corruption, and Allaah does not like corrupters." (Al-Maa’idah: 64). History testifies that this is the case of the Jews.
Many are the covenants that they have breached and trusts which they have betrayed; they are treacherous killers of innocent children, infants, the elderly and unarmed women, Allaah says that which translates as: “They [i.e., the Jews] have been put under humiliation [by Allaah] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allaah and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims]. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allaah …" (Aal ‘Imraan: 112).
The arrogance of the Jews has transgressed all limits; they have become obsessed with murdering and shedding the pure blood of innocent people; they have no conscience, no values and no sense of humanity in them. They are committing massacres in cities and refugee camps very frequently; they are deliberately mutilating bodies thinking that this will end the determination and will of the Muslim nation and to struggle on.
But this is far from the truth; the Palestinian Muslims have indeed set an excellent example and produced heroic personalities, they insist on struggling on and not surrendering - despite the massacres and the huge numbers of martyrs that have emerged from these, and regardless of the thousands of injured, the hundreds of hostages and the complete siege which is currently surrounding all their cities and villages; despite all of this, the Palestinian Muslims will continue to insist that there will be no surrender, no humiliation and that Jihaad will continue until Allaah brings victory. Allaah says that which translates as: “You [believers] are more fearful within their hearts than Allaah …" (Al-Hashr: 13).
What we see and hear about in Palestine is a classic example of a long Jihaad and the great perseverance of this nation; the Palestinians have performed Jihaad, persevered and suffered but they never gave up their religion or surrendered. ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "Do not fall short in your ambitions, because I do not know anything that prevents people from achieving might and power more than not being ambitious."
This nation continues its struggle without surrendering, it is sacrificing one martyr after the other, and by doing so it is setting the finest examples of patience. The Mujaahideen in the land of Palestine have taught the Muslim nation a lesson in how to live an honourable and mighty life, and enjoy eternal happiness in the Hereafter.
O protectors of Al-Aqsaa! Persevere, endure all this patiently and remain stationed, because the victory from Allaah is near, and know that when the night becomes its darkest, then dawn is very near. Allaah says that which translates as, “Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were shaken by poverty and hardship until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him asked: 'When is the help of Allaah?' Unquestionably, the help of Allaah is near" (Al-Baqarah: 214).
Second Khutbah
The reasons why Allaah grants victory are very tightly connected to the extent by which the Muslims adhere to the commands of their Lord, Allaah says that which translates as: “And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers. [That] indeed, they would be those given victory. And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome" (As-Saaffaat: 171-173).
The main reasons for victory are: remaining steadfast, being close to Allaah by continuously remembering and mentioning His names, avoiding dispute and conflict between the Muslim ranks and persevering through the great sacrifice of wars and battles, Allaah says that which translates as: “O you who have believed, when you encounter an enemy, stand firm and remember Allaah much, that you may be successful. And obey Allaah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allaah is with the patient" (Al-Anfaal: 45-46).
On the other hand, if Muslims abandon their Lord’s commandments, they will become weak, humiliated and defeated, Allaah says that which translates as: “So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers." (Aal ‘Imraan: 139).
O People of Palestine! Do not weaken, because Allaah is well capable of supporting you, granting you victory and weakening your enemy, Allaah says that which translates as: “…Allaah will weaken the plot of the disbelievers" (Al-Anfaal: 18) and also: “And do not weaken in pursuit of the enemy. If you should be suffering - so are they suffering as you are suffering, but you expect from Allaah that which they expect not. And Allaah is ever Knowing and Wise" (An-Nisaa’: 104).
O men of sacrifice and heroism! Victory is in the Hand of Allaah only; with His support, small numbers can overcome large numbers regardless of their force and power, Allaah says that which translates as: “… If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand." (Al-Anfaal: 65) and also, “… How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allaah. And Allaah is with the patient" (Al-Baqarah: 249).
Allaah is supporting the truth, and He is the only One who possesses all that which is in the heavens and earth, but your enemies are as Allaah has informed about when He says that which translates as: “They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you they will show you their backs [i.e., retreat]; then they will not be aided." (Aal ‘Imraan: 111).
The weapon of supplicating to Allaah is extremely effective if it emanates from a sincere heart and a pure tongue; so supplicate repeatedly and ask Allaah to grant victory to our brothers and sisters in Palestine and release them from the hardship they are going through; Ask Him to free our sacred places from the filthy Jews. It is preferred that one supplicates during the times when supplications are most likely to be respond to, such as the last third of the night, on Fridays, and during ones prostration to Allaah.
