O worshipers of Allah, fear Allah, be mindful of him, obey him, and do not disobey him as he said: O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

O worshipers of Allah, our Khutbah for today is about a remarkable creature, a terrible being. It is a visitor who does not seek permission, a guest who does not know etiquette, and is not ashamed in the presence of anyone. And there is no escaping meeting him and getting to know him. It is death!!

Allah, the Most High, says in Surah Al-Mulk "[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed." (Quran 67:2)

When Divine wisdom requires the termination of death, then at that time, death itself will be slaughtered. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, and the people of Hellfire enter Hellfire, death will be brought forward and placed between Paradise and Hellfire. Then it will be slaughtered. A caller will proclaim: 'O people of Paradise, there is no death for you! O people of Hellfire, there is no death for you!' The people of Paradise will rejoice even more in their joy, and the people of Hellfire will experience increased sorrow in their grief."

There is no distinction between one soul and another in experiencing death: the righteous die, and the wicked die. However, the difference lies in one crucial aspect: the ultimate destination. It is either towards an eternal blissful Paradise or a painful Hellfire. The factor that determines the distinction is the deeds one presents in this worldly life. "And every soul shall taste death, and you shall be paid in full your rewards only on the Day of Resurrection. Then whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception." (Quran 3:185)

This verse reminds us that every individual will inevitably experience death, and the true recompense for our actions will be granted on the Day of Resurrection. Success lies in being saved from the torment of Hell and entering Paradise. It also emphasizes that the worldly life is temporary and deceptive, and true fulfillment and justice await in the hereafter.

The wise person is the one who holds themselves accountable, prepares for what comes after death, and works towards it. The deprived, looser person, on the other hand, is the one who follows their desires and wishes for things without considering the consequences, relying solely on Allah without taking any personal responsibility.

In remembering death, there is a lesson for us to take and an implementation of the advice of theProphet ﷺ, he said, "Increase the remembrance of the destroyer of pleasures," meaning death. The Messenger ﷺ spoke the truth, for death demolishes many pleasures and disturbs many comforts. Al-Hasan said, "Death has exposed the world, leaving no joy for the one with a contented heart."

Forgetting death is a cause of corruption and hardness of hearts, while remembering death softens their hardness and awakens them from their negligence. Al-Rabia bin Khuthaym said, "If the remembrance of death leaves my heart for an hour, I fear that my heart would become corrupted!"

The purpose of remembering death is not to bring sadness and mourning, but rather to prepare for the day of departure. So when the appointed time comes, it finds you engaged in righteous deeds.

Death may come without prior warning or notification. Ibn Al-Jawzi said: "It is necessary for those who do not know when death will surprise them to be prepared and not be deceived by youth and good health. Indeed, the elderly are fewer in number among those who die, while the youth are more likely to pass away. That is why it is rare to find someone who grows old."

Servants of Allah, we remember death in order to prepare ourselves for the true and eternal life! Allah says: "And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous" (Surah Al 'Imran, 3:133)

So act now and plan for your real future and your hereafter before you say: 'I wish I had prepared for my life.'"

It is said that work for your worldly life as if you will live forever, and work for your hereafter as if you will die tomorrow." It is mentioned in a Hadith: "When you reach the evening, do not expect to see the morning, and when you reach the morning, do not expect to see the evening. Take advantage of your good health before you fall ill, and take advantage of your life before your death."

And whoever owes a right to someone, let him hasten to fulfill it. And whoever has committed a sin,let him purify himself with the water of repentance, i.e. should seek forgiveness and purify himself with sincere repentance." This is mentioned in the Hadith: "Actions are judged by their endings!"

And shorten your hopes, and prepare for the sudden arrival of death. For whoever prolongs their hopes excessively, their actions will be corrupted. It is said that “If there is any action you dislike it because of death, then leave it, and it will not harm you whenever you die."
