Fear Allah and adhere to His guidance; for verily, Taqwarepels sorrows and brings security. Allah says: (Allah will deliver those who feared Him to their place of safety; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve).
O servants of Allah, this is a brief visit to a small-sized prisoner, great in crime, swift in movement, severe in destruction; it stands behind the white bars: it is the tongue! Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Him besides whom there is no other god, nothing on earth is more deserving of a long imprisonment than the tongue."
And of the greatest blessings Allah has bestowed upon humans, distinguishing them from animals, is that He blessed them with the tongue; to express their feelings and articulate their needs; as Allah Almighty says: "Have We not made for him two eyes, a tongue, and two lips?"
And Allah did not imprison any organ more securely than the tongue; the teeth are in front of it, and the lips are behind it. So, do not release your tongue from its imprisonment unless you are safe from its evil! The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should either speak good or remain silent"
And the restraint of the tongue leads to security! Ibn Hazm said: "How often have we seen someone destroyed by his speech, and we have neither seen nor heard of someone destroyed by his silence."
The movement of the tongue is the easiest of the movements of the limbs, and it is the most harmful to the servant! The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ took hold of his tongue and said to Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), "Restrain this." Mu'adh asked, "O Messenger of Allah, are we accountable for what we say?" He replied, " May your mother grieve your loss O Mu'adh. Is there anything that throws people on their faces into Hellfire other than the harvests of their tongues?"
Umar entered upon Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) - who was holding his tongue - and he said: "This is what has led me into problematic situations."
And whoever counts his words as part of his deeds speaks only what concerns him! Allah says: "Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]."
How often a word uttered carelessly can destroy a person! The Prophet ﷺ said: "A man may utter a word he thinks harmless, which results in his falling to the depths of the Hellfire for seventy years."
Ibn al-Qayyim said: "How often do you see a man who abstains from immoral acts and injustice, yet his tongue tears into the honor of the living and the dead, and he does not care what he says!"
And he whose tongue becomes dry from the remembrance of Allah will moisten it with falsehood and sin! A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, the laws of Islam are too much for me; tell me something I can cling to." He ﷺ replied, "Keep your tongue wet with the remembrance of Allah."
And the heedless tongue is one of the entrances for Satan!" Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Satan perches on the heart of the son of Adam; when he becomes heedless, Satan whispers, but when he remembers Allah, Satan withdraws."
Beware that your tongue does not precede your thought; for speech is your captive until it leaves your mouth, and then you become its captive. Some of the predecessors said: "Speak good and gain profit, or keep silent about evil and be safe, or else know that you will regret it."
A servant's faith does not become straight until his heart and tongue become straight; the Prophet ﷺ said: "When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all the body parts humble themselves to the tongue and say: ‘Fear Allah in us, for we are with you. If you are straight, we will be straight; if you are crooked, we will be crooked.’"
Among the signs of good faith and Islam is speaking only what pleases the Most Merciful; the Prophet ﷺsaid: " From the excellence of a person's Islam is leaving what does not concern him." Ibn Rajab said: "Mostly, what is meant by leaving that which does not concern one is guarding the tongue from idle talk."
And guarding the tongue is a means to enter Paradise; for most of what leads to Hellfire is the mouth and the private parts. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Whoever can guarantee for me what is between his jaws and his legs, I can guarantee Paradise for him."
From the understanding of a man and the completeness of his intellect is speaking less about what does not concern him and is not beneficial; for when intellect is complete, speech diminishes! Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You were given two ears and one mouth, so you listen more than you speak."
As we reflect on the responsibility that accompanies our words and deeds, let us remind ourselves of the day when our own tongues, hands, and feet will bear witness against us regarding what we used to do. Allah Almighty says: "On the day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will bear witness against them as to what they used to do. On that day, Allah will pay them in full their true [due], and they will know that Allah is the manifest truth."
Let this reminder guide us to use our words, whether spoken or written, in ways that honour Allah and reflect the beauty of our faith. May we strive to be among those whose limbs will testify to their righteousness, not their transgressions.
