The Importance of the Mosque to Muslims
Sheikh AbdulAziz Rajab
All praise is due to Allah, and prayer and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah and his followers.
Today we will talk about the first house ever to be built on earth : 3: 96. Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for Al-'Alamin (the mankind and jinns).
Building a mosque was the first thing Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) did after he settled down in Almadinah .why the mosque? Why did He start with a mosque? Because his civilization had to start from the mosque, and because his taeachings had to spread from the mosque, and because his state could not come to existence unless it started from the mosque, also he taught the elite of the Muslim men, therefore the mosque is not for only performing the prayers, but also for other duties; teaching others, instructing them, beside other social and religious matters.
Mosques are the most favorite places to Allah the Exalted. Above all as we were by the prophet (ﷺ) when he said, "The dearest parts on the face of the earth near Allah are its mosques, and the most hated parts near Allah are its markets."
The mosque is the cornerstone of the Muslim community. It was rarely used as a places used solely for prayer but also served as a community centre. People went to the mosque for both religious and secular education, Mosques are the saftey refuge for the rigtheous who love them and enjoy being inside them. Allah -the Exalted- says 9: 18. The Mosques of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat)
Abu Hurayrah t narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The angels send blessings upon one of you so long as he is in his prayer-place where he offered his prayer, so long as he does not break his wudoo’; they say: ‘O Allah forgive him, O Allah have mercy on him.’
He also reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) said that mosques have pegs. Angels sit in them with the men, if one of the men is abscent, the angels miss him, if he is sick , they visit him, if he was in need of help , they help him. The Prophet (ﷺ) said : a man who sits in the mosque enjoys three qualities: he is useful to others, says wise words, or he is an expected merciful person.
Houses of Allah were built on earth with His care. Angels hover above them with their wings. They are the places for competing for doing good things, and for Muslims' gatherings with the goal of submitting to Allah. A proof of this is the Prophet's insistence of praying in the mosque during his last sickness, when he ordered his family to take him to the mosque, He did with the help of one man on each side.
Meadows of the Garden: Anas bin Malik t narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: “When you pass by the gardens of Paradise, them feast." They said: “And what are the gardens of Paradise?" He said: “The circles of remembrance."
Them feast means saying: (‘Glory is to Allah, (Subḥān Allāh)’ and ‘All praise is due to Allah, (Al-Ḥamdulillāh)’ and ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, (Lā Ilāha Illallāh)’ and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allāhu Akbar).’"
Righteous is the trait for those who maintain mosques 9: 18. The Mosques of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) , and give Zakat and fear none but Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance.
Abu Hurairah t reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who goes to the mosque at dawn or dusk (for Salat), Allah prepares a hospitable abode for him in Jannah, every time when he walks to it or comes back from it".
Angels make supplications to Allah to send His mercy, forgiveness and repentance. Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying: Prayer said by a man in congregation is twenty five degrees more excellent than prayer said by him alone in his house or in the market. This is because when any of you performs ablution and does it perfectly, and goes out to the mosque having no intention except praying, and nothing moves him except prayer, then at every step which he takes his rank is elevated by one degree on account of this (walking), and one sin is remitted from him for this (walking), till he enters the mosque. When he enters the mosque, he will be reckoned as praying as long as he will be detained by the prayer. The angels keep on invoking blessing on any of you so long as he remains seated in the place he prayer, saying: O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him; O Allah, accept his repentance so long as he does not harm anyone, or breaks his ablution.
Complete light on the Day of Judgement: Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Convey glad tidings to those who walk to the mosque in the darkness. For they will be given full light on the Day of Resurrection."
A man who loves going to the mosque to learn how to pray, about Islam, good manners, humility, love, generosity and giving is one of seven people who will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His ....Abu Hurairah t narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Seven people will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His ...." He mentioned the rest of the hadith, which says, “and a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given." (i.e. nobody knows how much he has given in charity).
The role of the mosque in teaching Muslims did not focus on men only, but also included women. Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Some women requested the Prophet (ﷺ) to fix a day for them as the men were taking all his time. On that he promised them one day for religious lessons and commandments. Once during such a lesson the Prophet said, "A woman whose three children die will be shielded by them from the Hell fire." On that a woman asked, "If only two die?" He replied, "Even two (will shield her from the Hell-fire).
Aishah-the mother of the righteous- proved of the Ansar women who seeked religous knowledge without feeling embarssed . she said: (The best of the women are the women of the Ansar. Shyness would not prevent them from inquiring about religion and from acquiring deep understanding in it.)
The benefit of attending learning gatherings: Abu Hurairah t reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who goes to the mosque at dawn or dusk (for Salat), Allah prepares a hospitable abode for him in Jannah, every time when he walks to it or comes back from it".
Abu Hurairah t reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Any group of people that assemble in one of the Houses of Allah to recite the Book of Allah, learning and teaching it, tranquility will descend upon them, mercy will engulf them, angels will surround them and Allah will make mention of them to those (the angels) in His proximity."
For all the previous reasons we invite you to attach your lives, hearts, acts, children, spouses to the mosque and to participate with us in the revival of the mosque and its role in our society. All thanks to Allah for the many activities which are available in the mosque like: the Friday sermon, lessons. Art and social activities, services such as teaching the Holy Quran and Arabic.
We have seen the importance of Islam which obliges us to do certain duties towards our mosques. What are those duties?
Mosques are places which Allah set great status to them: 24: 36. In houses (mosques), which Allah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honored), in them His Name is glorified in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings, 37. Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the Remembrance of Allah (with heart and tongue), nor from performing As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), nor from giving the Zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection). 38. That Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace. And Allah provides without measure to whom He wills.
They are the best places on earth: Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The parts of land dearest to Allah are its mosques, and the parts most hateful to Allah are markets.
What are our duties towards mosques?
Maintaining the mosques
9: 18. The Mosques of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat and fear none but Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance.
Not forbidding glorifying Allah in them
2: 114. And who is more unjust than those who forbid that Allah's Name be glorified and mentioned much (i.e. prayers and invocations, etc.) in Allah's Mosques and strive for their ruin? It was not fitting that such should themselves enter them (Allah's Mosques) except in fear. For them there is disgrace in this world, and they will have a great torment in the Hereafter.
Taking adornment when going to mosques
7: 31. O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying and going round (the Tawaf of ) the Ka'bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not Al-Musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).
Not causing any dirt inside them
Avoiding what harms the worshipers like eating onions, garlic, leeks…etc
Not raising the voice with clamor
Not stepping over the people’s necks
No buying or selling inside the mosque
Not inquiring about somethings someone has lost
Not leaving the mosque unnecessarily after the call for prayers
Attending knowledge gatherings
Attending Prayers in congregation
Restoring the mosque's social and educational role by building a vitreous society free from social problems, and building a strong nation that takes pride in being Muslim.
Bequeathing knowledge by learning and teaching it
You have won an ideal mosque where you, men and women, can perform your daily prayers, Fridays and Eid prayers, beside the opportunity for your children to learn the Holy Quran. It is also a place for your gatherings, therefore, you must appreciate this blessing and thank Allah for providing it. The first thing you can do to achieve that is to thank Allah by preserving and taking good care of them exactly as you do for your own homes. By serving the mosque you are actually serving the house of Allah which His guests go to.Just as Allah has made some of His bondsmen love and donate money for the mosques –may Allah reward them- each one of us must do his best to serve , preserve and do what pleases Allah inside them.
May Allah's prayer and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and companions.
