All praises are due to Allah, and I advise myself and you to observe Taqwa (consciousness and fear of Allah). Taqwa is the mark of the righteous, the security of the fearful, the source of success, and the path to true prosperity. Allah Almighty says: “Enter houses through their [proper] doors and fear Allah that you may succeed.”

O servants of Allah, every person in this world has desires they strive to fulfill and goals they work hard to achieve. But there are those whose time in this world has ended; they have left the temporary life and now witness the reality of the Hereafter. They once lived among us, but now they rest beneath the earth. Let us contemplate on the wishes of those who have passed away.

O Muslims, the greatest wish of the deceased is to return to this world. The righteous wish to return to gain more good deeds, while those who fell short wish to repent from their sins. However, it is too late for them. Allah Almighty says: “But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds until, when death comes to one of them, he says, ‘Indeed, I have repented now.’”

Ibrahim At-Taymi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “I imagined myself in the Hellfire, eating from its bitter fruits and drinking from its pus-filled waters. I asked myself, ‘What do you desire now?’ My soul replied, ‘To return to the world and do deeds that would save me from this punishment.’ So, I said to myself, ‘You are now in this world and have that chance—so act!’”

Among the wishes of the righteous is that, when one of them is placed in their grave and shown their place in Paradise, they long to go back and share the good news with their family and loved ones. Allah Almighty says regarding one of the righteous: “It was said, ‘Enter Paradise.’ He said, ‘I wish my people could know of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored.’”

The commentators (Mufassirun) say that he advised his people in life and in death, wishing they would know his blessed fate so they would believe like him and attain a similar state.

It is mentioned in a hadith that when a believer sees the expansiveness of their grave and their place in Paradise, they say, “Let me go back so I may give the glad tidings to my family!”

And among the wishes of the righteous is that a martyr would wish to return to this world to be killed again and again, for what they see of the honor in martyrdom. The Prophet ﷺ said: “No one who enters Paradise would love to return to the world, even if he were given everything on earth, except for the martyr, who wishes to return to be killed ten times over for the honor he sees.”

One of the wishes of the deceased is to pray more. Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a grave and said, “Whose grave is this?” They said, “So-and-so’s.” He ﷺ said, “Two units of prayer are more beloved to him than the remainder of your world.”

And one of the greatest wishes of the wicked (sinners), as they depart this world, is to repent to the All-Subduing One. Allah says, "And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “They will ask to return to the world to repent from what they were doing.”

And when the disbeliever realizes their fate at death, knowing that what they were upon was falsehood, they will wish to be among the Muslims and follow the commands of the Lord of all worlds. Allah says, "Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.'" Qatadah said: “They do not wish to return to gather worldly goods or fulfill desires, but rather to return and follow the obedience of Allah. May Allah have mercy on the one who acts according to what the disbeliever wishes for when they see the punishment!”

Another wish of the deceased is to give in charity, for its great reward and protection from punishment. Allah says, "And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'”

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “It refers to the believer, when death approaches, and he has wealth that he did not purify, did not perform pilgrimage from, or give its due rights. He then asks to return at the moment of death to give charity from his wealth and pay its dues.”

Among the wishes of the deceased is to increase in acts of worship and enjoy acts of devotion. When death came to Amir ibn Abdullah, he began to cry. They asked him, “What makes you cry?” He said, “I do not cry from fear of death, nor from longing for this world, but I cry for missing the thirst of midday fasting and the winter night prayer.”

Servants of Allah, hasten to make the most of this short life while your souls remain in your bodies. Appreciating the blessing of life calls for remembering Allah, thanking Him, and worshipping Him excellently. The Prophet ﷺsaid, “When one of you gets up from his bed, let him say, ‘Praise is to Allah, who has restored me in my body, returned my soul to me, and permitted me to remember Him.’”

So perfect your deeds and correct your errors, for these are but a few days before you depart from your world and meet your Lord with your deeds. Allah says, "On the Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it]."

Indeed, this world is the place of action, and the hereafter is the place of reward. Whoever does not work here will regret there, and every day you live is an opportunity. Some of the early righteous said, “If you saw how little of your life remains, you would lose interest in your long hopes. So, work for the Day of Resurrection, before regret and remorse!” Allah says, "And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet] they are in a state of heedlessness, and they do not believe. Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.”
