Afterwards: Fear Allah as He should be feared, and hold fast to the firmest handhold of Islam Allah says: "And take provisions, for indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah"
Servants of Allah: The greatest punishment is not feeling the punishment! Among the hidden punishments are a hardened heart and heedlessness of meeting the Lord. Imam Malik said, "A servant is not afflicted with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart."
Persisting in sin without repentance is a cause of hardness of heart! Allah says, "So because of their breaking the covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard"
Indulging in the pursuit of worldly pleasures and having long hopes lead to dryness of the eyes and hardness of the heart. Allah says, "Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth, and not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and the term was prolonged for them, so their hearts hardened"
Some interpreters said, "When their hopes were prolonged, their hearts hardened."
Hardness of the heart is misguidance and deprivation, and a barrier to the remembrance of the Most Merciful. Allah says, "So woe to those whose hearts arehardened from the remembrance of Allah. Those are in clear error"
Among the characteristics of the people of Hell are hardness and arrogance; Hell was created only to melt the hardened hearts! The Prophet ﷺ said, "Shall I not inform you about the people of Hell? They are every cruel, harsh, and arrogant person."
Ibn Uthaymeen said, "The 'cruel' person is the severe, harsh one who does not yield to the truth or to people, and the 'harsh' person is the miserly and stingy one."
Harshness and hardness cause repulsion and estrangement! Allah said to His Prophet ﷺ, "And if you had been rough, harsh-hearted, they would have disbanded from around you". Ibn Kathir said, "If you had been harsh in speech and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from you and left you. But Allah gathered them around you and softened your nature towards them."
A hardened heart is the weakest of hearts and the quickest to accept doubts and fall into trials. Allah says, "That He may make what is thrown by the devil a trial for those in whose hearts is disease and whose hearts are hardened"
If the heart is as hard as stone, it will not accept the truth, no matter how many proofs it has; just as the hard ground will not grow plants even if it receives all the rain! Shaykh al-Islam said, "If the heart is hard and harsh, like a stone, faith and knowledge will not imprint on it, because such a place requires softness."
The best hearts are the pure and tender ones; they see the truth clearly and preserve it with their gentleness! Allah says, "And that those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and that they may believe in it, and their hearts may humble to it". Al-Kalbi said, "So their hearts become soft towards the Quran."
Among the effects of a hardened heart are poor understanding and intent, and distortion of the religion. Allah says, "And We made their hearts hard, they distort the words from their proper places"
If Allah wants good for His servant, He will give him the remedy of trials, which soften his heart. Some said, "If it were not for the trials and tribulations of this world, the servant would be afflicted with the diseases of pride, vanity, and hardness of the heart, which would be the cause of his destruction!" Allah says, "But why did they not humble themselves when Our punishment came to them? But their hearts were hardened"
Among the things that soften the hearts are interacting with the poor and helping those in distress. A man complained to the Prophet ﷺ about the hardness of his heart; the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "If you want to soften your heart, then feed the poor and wipe the head of the orphan."
Reciting the Quran with contemplation opens the locks of the heart and melts its hardness! Allah says, "If We had sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and breaking apart from fear of Allah"
Ibn al-Qayyim said, "This is the state of mountains - which are hard stones - and this is their softness and fear from the majesty of their Lord; so how strange it is that a piece of flesh is harder than these mountains! It is not surprising for Allah to create for it a fire that melts it; so whoever does not soften his heart to Allah in this world, let him enjoy a little, for he has a much greater 'softener' ahead!"
And the remembrance of the Hereafter removes heedlessness and melts hardness! The Prophet ﷺ said, "Increase in the remembrance of the destroyer of pleasures," meaning death.
Among the remedies for a hardened heart are visiting graves and remembering resurrection. Ibn al-Jawzi said, "If you find heedlessness within yourself, take it to the graves and remind it of the proximity of departure."
Among the remedies for a hardened heart are abandoning sins and remembering the Knower of the unseen. A man said to Al-Hasan al-Basri, "O Abu Said, I complain to you about the hardness of my heart?" He said, "Soften it with remembrance of Allah!"
Ibn al-Qayyim said, "The heart has a hardness that nothing can soften except the remembrance of Allah; so when he remembers Allah, that hardness melts away just as lead melts in the fire."
Servants of Allah: These hearts can become hard like stones, rust like iron, and become soiled like clothes; sotake care to cleanse and maintain them, and soften them with repentance and supplication before the Hour comes. Allah says: "The Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any benefit, except for one who comes to Allah with a sound heart"
