O believers, fear Allah as He deserves and hold fast to the firm handhold. Allah says: “So fear Allah, O you of understanding, that you may be successful.”
O Muslims, before the migration to Madinah, people were either believers or disbelievers. However, after the Prophet ﷺ settled in Madinah, a new category of people emerged—those who outwardly professed Islam but concealed disbelief. These are the hypocrites.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah categorizes people into three groups: believers (four verses), disbelievers (two verses), and hypocrites (thirteen verses). Scholars explain that this detailed focus is due to their danger and the severe trial they pose to Islam. Allah says: “They are the enemy, so beware of them.”
Allah exposed the characteristics of hypocrites in over 300 verses to warn against their harm and characteristics. Ibn Al-Qayyim noted, “The Quran almost seems entirely about them due to their abundance on earth and the extent of their corruption.”
Among the characteristics of the hypocrites is that they disguise their hostility in the guise of knowledge and reform, but it is the pinnacle of ignorance and corruption. They claim to be reformers! Allah says:“Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.”
Another sign of hypocrisy is that they lie in wait for people of knowledge and faith, mocking the Sunnah and the Qur'an. Allah says: “And when it is said to them, ‘Believe as the people have believed,’ they say, ‘Should we believe as the foolish have believed?’ Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.”
The motto of the hypocrites is lying, laziness, heedlessness, and prolonged false hopes. Allah says:“They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.” And He says: “And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “The heaviest prayers on the hypocrites are the night prayer (‘Isha’) and the dawn prayer (Fajr).”
And these are the hypocrites, if you judge them according to the Qur'an, you will find them fleeing from it, and if you invite them to the Sunnah, you will see them turning away from it. Allah says: “And when it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.”
Among the characteristics of hypocrites is their admiration for sinful disbelievers and their disdain for the righteous believers. Allah says: “But they mock them, while Allah mocks them, and they will have a painful punishment.”
Another sign is their efforts to sow discord, their delight at the weakening of Islam, their gloating over the misfortunes of Muslims, their joy at their defeats, and their sorrow at their victories. Allah says: “They had already desired dissension before and had upset matters for you until the truth came and the ordinance of Allah appeared, while they were averse.”
The hearts of the righteous tremble with fear of hypocrisy due to their knowledge of its danger, its hidden nature, and its destructive effect. Hypocrisy is a fatal disease of the heart, often hidden even from those afflicted by it.
Ibn Abi Mulaika said, “I met thirty Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, all of whom feared hypocrisy for themselves.”
Allah has warned the hypocrites with the severest punishment. He says: “And among the inhabitants of Madinah are those who persist in hypocrisy; you, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a great punishment.” At-Tabari commented, “We will punish these hypocrites twice: once in this world and once in their graves.”
Allah also says: “Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire - and never will you find for them a helper.”
Some scholars said, “They are in the lowest depth because they are the worst disbelievers and possess the evilest hearts. The trial of Muslims through them is greater than through open disbelievers.”
The way to escape the darkness of hypocrisy is by holding firmly to the light of Islam and faith. The hypocrites turned away from the light of the Qur'an and revelation, so Allah turned away from them. Allah says:“And He left them in darkness [so] they do not see.”
On the Day of Judgment, their light will be extinguished on the Sirat (Bridge over Hellfire), the time they will need it most, just as the light of faith was extinguished in their hearts. They will call out to the believers: “Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light.” But when their light extinguishes, they will fall into the Fire, an evil destination!
Adherence to congregational prayers is protection from hypocrisy. Ibn Mas'ud said, “I have seen the time when no one would stay behind from the congregation except a known hypocrite.”
And among the ways to protect oneself from hypocrisy is safeguarding the heart from being exposed to desires and doubts and protecting the ears from listening to rumoursand false reports. During the estrangement of religion, the true nature of the hypocrites is revealed, and their harm toward Muslims increases. Allah says: "They desire to cause you fitnah (trials), and among you are listeners to them." The commentators said: "This means that among you are those who listen to their words and believe them because there is a group among the Muslims who fall for their deceptions."
As for what follows: beware of the traits of hypocrites. Strive for sincerity and certainty and maintain your commitment to praying in congregation. In the hadith: “Whoever prays for Allah for forty days in congregation, catching the opening takbir, two absolutions will be written for him: one absolution from the Hellfire, and one absolution from hypocrisy.”
Increase your remembrance of the Most Merciful, and beware of heedlessness and disobedience. Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Frequent remembrance of Allah is a safeguard against hypocrisy; Allah is too generous to afflict a heart that remembers Him with hypocrisy. Hypocrisy only enters hearts that are heedless of Allah's remembrance.”
Adhere to truthfulness and supplication and remain between fear and hope. A man once heard Abu al-Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) seeking refuge from hypocrisy in his prayer. After he completed his prayer, the man asked him: “What is your concern with hypocrisy?” Abu al-Darda’ replied: “Do not feel secure from trials. By Allah, a person may be tested in a single moment, and it could cause him to turn away from his religion!”
